Hi,
Good. Would Thursday 10AM good for you? I’ll have a meeting with the university folks, so everybody will be present.
But we can also find another slot if that’s not ok for you.
Gergely

Hi Gergely,
It is great to hear back from you! Yes, let’s set up a quick meeting for this week to explore this further.
Regards,
Cristian

Subject: EIT project proposal
Hi Christian,
Long time no see. J But we are back again, since we would like to start an activity in the area of domain specific language based packet processing (best candidate so far: P4, see p4.org). Actually there are already some results from our university partners, if you are interested, I can send you their report or their Sigcomm demo proposal. They heavily use DPDK, that’s where you guys come into our focus.
What I’m proposing right now is to start a bigger activity, an EIT project. Here I copy-paste the initial proposal. If Intel is interested (I think since we could very well use DPDK and Packet Framework in such activity you should J) let’s call for a short review meeting and finalize the proposal. If I need to contact somebody else from Intel too, let me know.
Thanks!
I also cc’d Andras, who is our line manager and Sandor, who is the professor at ELTE leading their P4 activity and this EIT proposal.
BR,
Gergely
The text:
Networking innovation in data plane: Open Protocol Independent Programmable Switch for SDN and cloud networks
Highly scalable open switch based on Intel DPDK that can run on commodity hardware and programmed by the P4 language (Protocol Independent Packet Processing language - http://p4.org). The project targets to develop a production ready, high-performance P4 switch that can work on line rate by exploiting the benefits of Intel DPDK. Though P4 is expected to enable softwarisation in the data plane and regarded as OpenFlow 2.0, its efficient, high-performance implementation is still missing. From the technical side, the project will cover the definition of generic switch APIs, data-control plane interactions (contributing to standardization efforts and other communities) as well as the development of a high performance P4 compiler for Intel platform. As a basis we will use ELTE's P4 prototype compiler with its hardware abstraction library for Intel DPDK. The final product will be an efficient implementation of the Protocol Independent Switch Architecture (PISA) model for commodity Intel platforms that can provide both data center networks and SDN with much higher flexibility and the ease of extensions with any new protocols.
Business plan: The core compiler for Intel platform will be released under open source. We would like to create a community around our compiler and contribute to standardization bodies. The business model should be similar to other open source efforts like OpenStack, OpenVSwitch and Apache projects, where business champions provide support and extensions to commercial customers while the core software remains open.
Business champion: A new spin-off, Ericsson, Intel
Potential partners: Ericsson, Intel - it is also possible to involve companies from Silicon Valley (through the EIT Digital node in San Francisco).
Project duration 1 year: 1st January 2017 - 31st December 2017
Submission deadline: 20th May 2016
